#678 In Spring

Perhaps my final build for 2022. Fittingly, figures from MasterBox of Ukraine, in a diorama that attempts to capture my greatest hope for what will come in the new year..

Title: “In spring..”

Perhaps my final build for 2022. Fittingly, figures from MasterBox of Ukraine, in a diorama that attempts to capture my greatest hope for what will come in the new year..

“If we survive this winter, and we will definitely survive it, we will definitely win this war.”

— President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.”

— Pablo Neruda

The Kit

I’m using two figures from the Master Box Civilians Western Region, WWII era MB3567 kit. The sculpting of the old man is very good. The teenage girl not so well sculpted, but being one of a very small number of decent female civilian figures, I have seen her pop up in quite a few dioramas by other modellers!

Build Log

High-density foam for the base. I suspect I was subliminally channelling Night Shift when I made the wall.

build01a

Detritus of war came from the spare parts box

build01b

Base colour and layout..

build01c

build01d

Laying down some grass, vines and gravel

build01e

Adding paint and pastels for the ground colour

build01f

Tree is copper wire frame and some dried flower stems for the finer detail.

build01g

I realise I missed taking photos of the process of adding all the leaves (one by one with superglue)

build01h

I like how the old man came out. Sorry, missed taking all the in-progress shots.

build02a

build02b

The “girl” seems to have distinctly “middle-aged” features which I tried to soften down. The hair replacement was a somewhat failed experiment: from a distance, seems OK, but totally out of scale close-up.

build02c

Compositing the figures with the base and adding leaf scatter

build02d

“In spring..” final composite?

build03a

build03b

The broom is actually a rake from the MB kit with bristles added.

This page is a web-friendly rendering of my project notes shared in the LEAP GitHub repository.

LEAP is just my personal collection of projects. Two main themes have emerged in recent years, sometimes combined:

  • electronics - usually involving an Arduino or other microprocessor in one way or another. Some are full-blown projects, while many are trivial breadboard experiments, intended to learn and explore something interesting
  • scale modelling - I caught the bug after deciding to build a Harrier during covid to demonstrate an electronic jet engine simulation. Let the fun begin..
To be honest, I haven't quite figured out if these two interests belong in the same GitHub repo or not. But for now - they are all here!

Projects are often inspired by things found wild on the net, or ideas from the many great electronics and scale modelling podcasts and YouTube channels. Feel free to borrow liberally, and if you spot any issues do let me know (or send a PR!). See the individual projects for credits where due.
